Welcome to the Black Cow Bistro, located in the historic Art Deco Luck's Butchery shop in Launceston, Tasmania, specialising in free range, grass fed, dry aged premium Tasmanian Beef.

Historically the cow has been important to many cultures. It has been seen and worshiped as a symbol of contentedness, fecundity, the passive yet creative and generative powers of natures, patience, nourishment, abundance, fertility and equifinality. It is also, of course, an excellent source of protein.

The Black Cow logo has been inspired by the amazing ancient artworks in the Lascaux Caves in France, which carbon dating indicates are more than 17,000 years old.

I loved dining at the Black Cow- and what wonderful food and service you provide. A classy little bistro in the heart of the CBD, the Black Cow is certainly a place I will be visiting again. Thank...

I first visited the restaurant about twelve months ago and have to say I was totally blown away by the service & quality!

I attended again on Saturday the 17th July, the service was attentive and warm, however I was troubled by the fact that our order was mixed up!

The entree's were outstanding, however we ordered two rib eye and one was medium/rare with black cow butter the other was medium to well done with no sauce and mustard on the side. When order was served, they both looked pretty much the same (fantastic) mine the med/rare with butter was great. My friend covered his with mustard and started eating, when he got half way into the steak he realised it was the medium rare.

We called someone over the person was extremely polite, but suggested that if we had said something earlier "they could have thrown it back on the grill" is actually not the point, as to me that is the sort of thing you would expect from a pub or god forbid the Saloon bar!

I guess secondly the fact that all the Black Cow basically sells is steak and getting the right order to the right customer would be a key focus.

Thirdly given the price and level of quality your restaurant aspires to, you would see it as a key issue.

Moving on to dessert, we chose the chocolate fondant (truly amazing) however I ordered a coffee and although the dessert had to be cooked and would be a minimum of 15 minutes, my coffee arrived in five minutes.

I wrote to the executive chef (no response what so ever) & restaurant manager and had no response until I wrote to one of the owners – fifteen minutes later I received I received an email with apology – and a poor “your feedback is important” sorry not good enough!   (islandboi - August, 2010)

Lovely food - but jammed into the space and perhaps "over-serviced"? Everyone at our table commented they were reluctant to move an arm as in each instance an extra-attentive waiter jumped to serve. May better suit a couple wanting a service-intensive evening rather than a group of friends looking for good food and a more relaxed atmosphere.   (Texas - January, 2010)

Highly recommend this restaurant - food was excellent and our waiter Darcy was really helpful and knowledgeable. Will go again when next in Launceston
