      Dined upstairs at the Monkey for friends' engagement dinner. $50 drop menu. Tables of 12 in an unheated room in winter. They served a table at a time - a good idea when serving so many but such long delays between tables one lot finished up more than an hour before the last table. At our table it took 3.5 hours to get 2 courses (our friends organised their own cake for dessert.) A pasta was sent back - there was a huge claggy clump in it. We sneaked a bit of red confetti under it first and sure enough 1.5 hrs later it was served to me - confetti and all. The kitchen simply couldn't deliver. The food would have been OK except it was stone cold. There wasn't even a hint of pink in the steaks. They ran out of servings - pretty bad considering the numbers were settled in advance and it was a drop menu! The wait staff were embarrassed, our hosts were humiliated. A totally disappointing evening. The bride-to-be ended up in tears and she's not the sooky type. Overall it was appalling. For a function with family and friends you don't want the grandparents and parents waiting in a freezing cold room on unpadded chairs for their meal after 9pm!       Went here for lunch on a weekend. My partner ordered the pork belly broth thing. Now I know pork belly has some fat attached to it, but this was absolutely inedible. My partner spent the whole meal fishing out cubes of fat and piling them up on her side plate. Barely a morsel of pork to be found.

      I had snapper on pesto couscous. Two measly strips of bland fish on a tasteless bed of couscous. It was so dull that I got bored with it and didn't finish it.

      The waiter, to his credit, did inform the chef of our comments & gave us two complimentary glasses of wine by way of apology. It's actually quite nice decor, quite cozy on a cold day, just a shame the food is such a letdown.   (ChowDown - See my reviews (14) - July, 2009)

      in order to fit this review in to the allotted word count, it will be in dot point format:

      - bar staff rude when asked simple (and reasonable) questions regarding menu,

      - meal came with wild beast (wasp) as accompaniment,

      - meals were small and overpriced

      - meals did not meet desription on menu, eg - schnitzel did not come with advertised eggplant & zucchini, rather tomato sauce and cheese (wait staff assured us that the former were "diced" into this sauce) and "herb crusted" chicken fillet in burger was a small chicken schnitzel - no herbs.

      - food did arrived in a timely manner.

      in all, we were left feeling a distinctly ripped off...   (See my reviews (2) - January, 2008)
