    Catalina is one of Australia’s great destination restaurants situated on a landmark Rose Bay site on Sydney Harbour’s eastern foreshore. Michael and Judy McMahon opened Catalina in 1994 with a simple goal: to be Sydney’s favourite place to eat the best by the water.

    Rose Bay was the site of Australia's first international airport. From 1938, flying boats, including the famous Catalinas ruled the skies. In 1957, local identity Jim Bendroit built a restaurant and nightclub called Caprice, jutting out over the water. Caprice captivated Sydney-siders for years and was the hottest spot in town.

    After the heyday of the Caprice era and years after the last of the big flying boats had flown out, the McMahons extensively renovated the building with architect Leigh Prentice. The restaurant was designed as a homage to the beauty of Sydney Harbour. Diners have a panoramic view of Sydney Harbour at water-level, punctuated only by the comings and goings of a working harbour, and incoming commuter sea planes based in front of the restaurant.

    Catalina is one of only a few restaurants in Sydney whose kitchen remains open from midday to late. Diners are welcome all day (full menu available).

      We were attended to by Jessica - who

      was delightful, unobtrusive yet there when needed. She had a fantastic service ethic.

      The location for lunch was relaxing, with water planes taking off & landing on the water.

      This beautiful restaurant scores well on several counts:

      1. Service is outstanding

      2. Food is outstanding.

      3. View is beautiful.

      4. Noise is so bad it is hard to believe and certainly does not make for a long special lunch. Proper sound insulation is a must and will certainly further elevate opinions re the nature of this restaurant.   (February, 2009)

      We went for lunch on spec. and were very well received. The service was exceptional and they were happy to accomodate our children. The food was excellent and the venue stunning. Even the resident pelican seemed friendly!   (See my reviews (10) - October, 2008)

    Group booking policy Although there is no private dining room, Catalina regularly hosts smaller sit down functions from 14 - 40 people in areas of the restaurant. Tables are grouped together; menus, place cards and wines organised; and the clients' needs individually assessed and accommodated. - download (pdf)

    Group cancellation policy Deposits are required for all group bookings. These deposits are forfeited if a cancellation occurs within a certain time frame (time frame varies according to the time of year i.e. whether in peak season or off season).
