Chedi Restaurant offers contemporary Thai dining; combining classical Thai cuisine with a fresh approach. Our aim is three fold; good Thai food, genuine Thai service and affordable prices.

Chedi Thai Restaurant is located on colourful King Street, Newtown, where most Thai food fanatics agree you will find the best Thai Restaurants and Cafes in Sydney.

At Chedi Thai Restaurant we cater for large groups and functions or private dinners for two. Our seating plan can be arranged to suit parties or individuals and we are delighted to welcome family groups and kids of all ages to experience Thai food.

    Chedi really bend over backwards for their customers. They care. I've never experienced service like this. Ever. My last review mentioned a menu mistake, which happens, and Chedi were really sorry about it. Genuinely sorry.

    This is our favourite Thai place. We stopped ordering from other Thai restaurants and we only stick to these guys. They often give us extra food or cans of drink, which is very nice of them. They are quick and reliable. They understand customer service. I'd recommend this place to anyone. The crispy pork dishes are the best!     First time ordering delivery from here. Chedi really cares about their customers! I was surprised with their attention to detail with our niggly requests that other restaurants often ignore.

    The prawns with fresh snow peas had numerous fresh, great tasting prawns. The real deal here, not the frozen bullocks.

    The green curry with chicken got ten thumbs up from my partner, who is often picky when it comes to curry. Quality pieces of chicken used and not rubbery, inedible giblets.

    The rice paper rolls! I could eat those until I burst.

    I'm a King St local and would have ordered from Chedi over 20 times. They are consistently fantastic, with food that is second to none. Well worth the price, which is very reasonable in any sense, and their service is impeccable. I cannot reiterate enough how excellent this place is.     Firstly have to say the Steamed Fish Souffle in Banana Leaf was sooooo good, luscious. So now onto rest of review. Value, overpriced eg $12 for chicken satay skewers which in no way any better than any other skewers i have had. Quality wise Chedi are great though. Steamed fish balls, duck pancakes, BBQ lamb cutlets, corn patties, green mango salad, savory egg custard w prawn mince were all good. The rest, well nothing wrong but have had better and again i say overpriced.

    Recommend ordering from here just to try the Steamed Fish Souffle. Savory Egg Custard also interesting and worth checking out for something different to usual thai places.   (nathan - See my reviews (61) - August, 2012)

    Not a very good experience. My Massamun curry was full of pieces of tender but fatty meat. starters were average. All very average towards poor. wasted most of it. Maybe it travelled badly. Got one can of scwheppes as a thank you for ordering starters, mains & sides for two!   (August, 2012)

    The Massaman curry was delish! Good value given the amount of meat included. The flavour was the best I've ever tasted. Well worth a try. Spring roles also yummy!     I was very happy and surprised to get a call from Chedi in response to my last review. They apologised and offered a complimentary meal to make up for it.

    It's very refreshing to see a restaurant take criticism on board and actively try to make up for it.

    I love Chedi Thai! Their food is really tasty, it's the best Thai available in Newtown.

    The food arrives quickly and hot. The delivery person is also very friendly.

    Good service and not bad value. However I found the food wasn't great at all, if you were to compare it to authentic thai. This is very westernised thai food where the level of spice caters to those of a sensitive pallet. The Tom Yum soup seemed to have high amount of added MSG, which gave a subtle feeling of nausia afterwards. The fish cakes were nice, but may have had an additional meat added (perhaps pork) - beware pescotarians! The medium spiced chinese brocoli, seemingly had no spice at all, and again had quite a noticeable amount of (perhaps) MSG. This was not my most pleasant Thai food experience, and leads me to wonder if the other (overall 10) ratings are authentic.   (Aaron - See my reviews (4) - February, 2012)

    I've eaten in the restaurant before and it was a great experience.

    Delivery was a big let down.

    The food took a long time to arrive and when it did arrive, the cuts of meat were very very fatty and essentially inedible.

      I am from Thailand and go to Chedi when i am homesick. The food is authentic Thai and the chefs use all the ingredients found in Thailand. I really like their jungle curry and steamed fish. The corn patties are usually sold on the street in Thailand but at Chedi they are very fresh and more delicious.   (Nong Umpawan - March, 2010)

      We went to Chedi on a Saturday night without booking and were given a table next to the garden. As we were two it was great to be seated away from the noisy groups having parties.       Have had several brilliant meals at Chedi Thai. The staff are always accommodating and seem focused on recreating the authentic Thai flavours you won't get at many Sydney restaurants.       A great dinner dining experience. The service was warm and welcoming. Tasty Thai food cooked with fresh produce and beautiful presentation. The ambience was excellent, plenty of room and space between tables, compared to most Asian restaurants which are generally cluttered to maximize space.       I normally dont eat thai food, though as i was strolling down King Street of Newtown, i noticed a nice restaurant with traditional floor seating. The friendly staff greeted me and took me and my partner to the table. The entrees were astounding, the mixed entree has a nice variety. The green curry with chicken was just awesome, and would definately recommend it.       I visited Chedi Restaurant with a large group of 40 people from Sydney Uni on a Wednesday night. We had a banquet option for $35 per head. A great selection of dishes and vegetarian options to accommodate the vegans in our group. Service was excellent and the section of the restaurant where we were seated was like being in a private room without the walls. This restaurant is regularly visited by the staff at the uni and I can understand why. The most impressive restaurant I have been to in Newtown.   (Terry Tout - November, 2009)

      Dined at Chedi with eight friends on a Friday night. The venue is very presentable, with plenty of lovely Thai-themed touches such as wicker upright chairs, the option of floor seating and flattering ambient light throughout the restaurant. That said, when the restaurant fills up, it does get quite noisy, but not to the point where you can't hold a conversation across the table.

      The service here is decidedly hands-off; the staff only make themselves present to take orders and serve, which they do with minimal fuss. Efficiency seems to be the objective here, so don't expect the same level of interaction as you enjoy at your local. However, the meals come out quite rapidly, so such efficiency obviously has its benefits.

      The food itself is fresh, well presented and flavoursome, however the variety doesn't pull any real punches - much of what can be found here is common to other Thai restaurants in the area. That said, the duck stir-fry is certainly a delight and the crispy pork was decadent enough to be a point of discussion the following day. Even now, I'm kicking myself for not ordering the fish souffle (ho mok pla), as it holds a particular nostalgia with me.

      In all, Chedi makes for a great (albeit safe) night out with friends, however at $30 a head for entrees and a main, it does face solid competition from a litany of other well-presented, but considerably more affordable options on busy King St. Recommended.   (roshodgekiss - See my reviews (12) - March, 2009)

      After living in Asian for over 10 years I was really pleased to find an authentic Thai restaurant which not only had good food but the same levels of service that you find at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok. I gave "value for money" a 10 because I do not like Sydney restaurants that follow the American trend of giving huge portions of inferior food. Thai food is to be shared with a number of different dishes of moderate portion size. Chedi is truly a great experience if you want the real deal.   (Food Fan - April, 2007)

    Shanya Richardson - (Team Leader) better know by her Thai nickname: Kai; comes from a family of restaurateurs & knows a lot about Thai food. She was born in Yaowarat, Bangkok’s Chinatown & grew up surrounded by food stalls, bustling restaurants & spicy aromas. At the age of 19, she moved to Sydney & by 25 had opened her first restaurant: Thaifoon. During the following 5 years, she opened a further 2 Thai restaurants in Newtown & Darlinghurst, before deciding it was time to return to Thailand to raise a family. After nearly 10 years absence, she returned to Sydney with a brigade of gifted Thai chefs to open Chedi Restaurant.
