On Friday, a gal pal and I (also a gal) thought we'd head to Il Solito for dinner. We were "greeted" at the door by being told there would be a 90 minute wait for a table, but that we could eat at the bar if we wished. Glancing at the bar, I noticed only one bar stool, and with a smile on my face and a jovial voice I asked if we needed to take turns sitting on the stool. Doorman's response: "I can get you another stool smart arse". My reaction: "I beg your pardon?". Doorman's response: "You started it. Next time don't be such a smart arse". At which point, gal pal and I turned around and walked across the road to the lovely Italy I. When I called to complain the following day, I had the privilege of speaking to the doorman, who in fact turned out to be the restaurant manager, Steve. Great manager Steve. Il Solito owners, I wander how many other customers he is driving away??   (Murphy - May, 2011)

Ate here the last Saturday night with friends. Unfortunately the head chef was not there as he was on other occasions. Not the old one named above but the new one, Nathan Morphett or something. Anyway, was a bit disappointed. Food was excellent the times I ate when he cooked. Lacked good execution on sat. Also the desserts were different to last year which was a shame. I thought his chocolate torte and tira misu were fabulous. My partner had the lamb though and said it was really tasty. The calamari serve was too small and a bit cold when it arrived at the table. The white bait was too. Service in the dining room was attentive and charming. recommended Wine went very well with the meal. Different floor staff to what I remember, a little less suave all round and perhaps showing the stress of a full bistro upstairs. Overall it was good, but not as good as it can be.   (Groanerman - February, 2011)

Had heard a lot about this place and it definitely lived up to expectations. We had the Salumi and olives to start with and everything on there was exceptional. I had the marinara pasta for main and it was so yummy! the seafood was so fresh and cooked to perfection. My partner had the pork rib eye and in his words 'it's absolutely amazing!' All in all it was a very memorable experience. We arrived at 7 when it was a little quieter which was good because as it got busier service suffered a fair bit. The people sitting next to us had to wait for about 30mins before they even got a drink! Oh well we will definitely be back.   (August, 2009)

Meals were excellent however slightly on the smaller side for the price.

Venue could do with a directions board on the corner at the alleyway to avoid minor confusion for first timers.

All in all I declare this to be the best restaurant I have eaten at. It takes the mantle as my favorite and I will most certainly be returning.. Regularly. LE

Il solito posto is my favourite place in Melbourne to exprience the best of what the Italian cuisine has to offer.   (Lauren - See my reviews (2) - November, 2008)

Service was a bit overdone; waiter continuously interrupted conversation. They also didn't indicate that there would be such a long wait for the food.   (September, 2008)

Fantastic Waiter!! made suggestions, gave great advice! Loved him to bits! the food was wonderful, I had specials and they were just that...special!

      Very enjoyable night.   (July, 2008)

Good atmosphere froma highly competent, efficient and friendly staff. The noise adds to the ambience and the food is spot on. Worth a visit any time.   (June, 2008)

The atmosphere was fabulous as was the service however was surprised at the cost of the food in accordance to what we received. Small dishes that was quite overpriced.   (June, 2008)

Lunch was very nice, but for the business lunch next time I would book the bistro area.   (April, 2008)

We thoroughly enjoyed the food and wine at this restaurant, but the service was shocking. The waitress served us the wrong bottle of wine and tried to charge us for another - which was $180 more expensive than the one we ordered. When she realised the mistake she accused us! What happened to the customer is always right attitude. Unfortunately we wouldn't go back.   (See my reviews (3) - November, 2007)

We were recommended this little basement trattoria and told to try the Rigatoni Ragu le Agrellu from the bar black board and it was superb. We started with a wonderful Antipasto and shared the Rigatoni Ragu and the best Linguini Frutti di Mare. All washed down with a bold WA Cabernet. The service was excellant and the staff very friendly. For our first time in Melbourne, we can only, highly recommend this wonderful trattoria.   (GoAnnie - See my reviews (2) - November, 2007)

Not knowing what to expect. We had a wonderful time. Would recommend this restaurant to friends. The service was excellent. We will back.   (November, 2007)

    • Overall 8.5 - Food 9, Ambience 9, Value 7, Service 9

Dinner with work colleagues in the basement. Service was perfect - friendly and professional without pretension or fussiness. Mains of seared tuna and rack of lamb were spectacular as was the dessert of vanilla-flecked pannacotta; however special of swordfish and vegetarian gnocchi were rather skint on the serving... overall we will definitely come again.   (See my reviews (4) - April, 2007)

Great food and beautiful thoughtful staff. Having lunch there was like having lunch at a friend's house... I'll go there for lunch or dinner every time I need to eat in the city.   (amy - February, 2007)
