    The Jailhouse Grill is continuing a 130 year tradition by offering fine food and beverage to locals and travelers alike. The building was built in the mid 1800’s using handmade convict bricks from the local “brickfields” some 500 meters away and is typical of a Victorian Georgian Inn or Public House of the era. Registered with the Tasmanian Heritage Council, it is regarded as important to the community’s sense of place. Originally named the Prince of Wales, Launcestonians will be more familiar with the names, the Richmond Hotel, Barnaby’s Hotel and the Ball and Chain Grill. In continuing the tradition of the previous Inn Keepers and Publicans, the Management and Staff extend a warm welcome to you and hope that the meal, service and ambience combine for a pleasant experience.

      Lovely cosy resturant. Great food the steaks are perfect and cooked to your liking and also you can choose the size. The salad bar help yourself was great.       Went here for Father's Day, Anniversary and Birthday. At first they were really attentive then the food came. I had the lamb rump.....it was cold ( the little dab of butter on didn't even melt). Could only eat half because it was soooo tough. Told the waiter who to be fair did offer to have something else cooked, but that was all no offer of anything else and then they didn't come near us for the rest of the night.       We go there quite often with the family, especially on Monday nights. We absolutely love the Jailhouse, the steak is always cooked perfectly, the salad bar has so many tasty options that you just want to try everything, and the staff are always friendly and willing to help. The only bad experience was one night I wasn't particularly hungry and ordered the soup, and that was quite bland and disappointing- but who goes to a grill to get soup anyway. I've noticed now the meals have been downsized, but they are still tastier then ever. Thank you Jailhouse!   (Mary - See my reviews (8) - July, 2011)

      Very good steak cooked in front of us. Waitress helped one of our party who had special dietary requirements. Good atmosphere in interesting surroundings. A little noisy. Definitely recommended for anyone heading to Launceston.   (Tasmania2009 - See my reviews (98) - February, 2009)

      dark and uninteresting interior potatoes served with all meals could do with some impovement to make them more intersting.... water was terrible and warm as well on a hot day... add some lemon and filter the water...   (February, 2009)

      We loved it so much we went two nights in a row whilst staying in Launceston. Great meals, good variety of food and we loved the stir fry vegies. What a top place, great friendly staff, interesting decor. We'll go back again.   (See my reviews (3) - December, 2008)

      The mains are well above 25 dollars a meal.

      The meal is tasty, served within reasonable time. It is cosy but the tables are very small and not a lot of room.

      The main meals were great, perhaps more of smaller potatoes in comparison to the 2 large ones with the 600gr steak meal. The salad/pasta bar wasn't very tasty the "HOT" pasta was cold but the atmosphere was warm, and the timber look was very rural and rugged I liked the decor. Waitresses were kind and polite.   (September, 2008)
