We visited the Silky Apple on Saturday 06th October 2012. We had read the mixed reviews but decided to take a chance anyway. At first the resturant seemed clean and tidy, the service was very good. The inside is traditional but somewhat dated and like a 1970's restaurant, chinese murals and lots of mirrors. For entree we had honey roast pork, garlic shrimps and dim sims. Our daughter enjoyed the dim sims , the garlic prawns were very strong in flavour, and ona small saucer for $12.50. The pork was sweet but very tough to eat. The mains: Described as half a peking duck ( Boneless ) chopped up in a sauce, but it arrived as half a duck chopped up with some bones still attached which made it somewhat difficult to eat. We had fried rice, lemon chicken, and fried vegetables. Overall the food was a 5/10 at best. Not great or even good, just basic takaway standard. It was Saturday night at 8pm when we arrived, and the restaurant was near empty, with only 4 tables with people on them on both levels of a 2 level restaurant. The service was quick, but sterile, and without a smile. The manager seemed to be standing watching very watchfully over the staff, and we didnt get any sense of an atmosphere of celebration, or even happiness in the place. The plates were removed so quickly that you were almost still eating. 30 seconds after our mains were finished the plates were removed, we were asked if we wanted sweets which we said no. The bill arrived 20 seconds later and was just slapped down on the table and the waitress walked away. We felt rushed, and would have liked to have been offered coffee or tea, or at least been given 5 minutes to sit after our meal or at least asked if we enjoyed our meal. Never a good sign. While we were eating, tables were being re-made around us as soon as people left. After we paid we went downstairs to leave and the manager was sitting at a table adding up receipts, we said thanks, and without even looking up he said " Yeah, buy.." and continued adding up his receipts as if every penny of the takings were more important than the customers. Overall, it was my daughters 11th birthday, and while we told them this, they made no effort to say happy birthday. Not even so much as inform the kitchen who even at the cheapest restaurants ( of which they are not ) would bring out a slither of cheesecake with a candle in it. Generally they seem to run a very tight ship in speed, and clearing tables, however having dined all over the world, we felt they were prioritising organisation over atmosphere, food quality, and warmth. We got the impression that their priorities were turning tables as fast as they could. Leaving at only 9pm on a Saturday night, and seeing the manager furiously adding up tickets in plain sight just left us cold. This is something that should never be done in sight of customers as it simply says... " Your just money to us " Going by the quality of the food which was very basic and quite bland,...

Over many years this restaurant has been unfailing in it's consistancy for high quality meals and excellent service. It is great to always be assured of knowing that a night at the Silky Apple will be a delightful experience. The peking duck in paarticular is a favourite of ours.
