Beef has to be matured, not too fresh but not too old, all the sinewy parts have to be removed and so on. If you use a thick hot-plate with a strong flame, simple physics will present you with a half decent steak, but if you want more than that, you need a good chef. Even in the same restaurant, there is a big difference depending on who is behind the Teppanyaki bar. So, if you liked what you have just tasted, remember to ask the chef's name, for your next visit. As always, you are likely to get a better service from him when you book him for your table. For the chef's sake, do not forget to tip him.

Having recently gone back there and taking guests who had never tried Japanese food, the restaurant did not disappoint! Our guests were unsure about "raw food" and certainly were a little hesitant about the cooked food being cooked in front of them, but after a few laughs, a fantastic Chef and the lovely waitresses dressing us up in our "Banquet Bibs" our guests settled in and went along with the show. We take a range of ages with us from young children through to 65+ and each age group has a terrific time. Our chef wasn't as lively as the previous chef we had been served by, but he was newer to the restaurant but he still made sure that all were engaged in the evening. Food: Brilliant selection, nothing much has changed with the menu in the last 4 years, but the quality is still excellent. Ambience: Lovely, it's quaint and it's snug. I scored it a bit lower because the chef was a little less ambitious than previous ones, so our experience was a bit "muted" over the last. Value: The cost is higher than some other restaurants, but with Asian based food and certainly Fish & Seafood Japanese prepared you will find that it is expensive. Is it worth it? YES! I've been to city "Seafood Speciality restaurants" and made $$$ more but the quality and presentation was nowhere near that of the Teppanyaki experience here. Service: Brilliant! Everyone was catered for, the staff were lovely and clean at all times, all requests were met with a smile, even dietary requirements and cooking requests. Nothing was too great a problem for them, and no one made you believe you asked for something ridiculous. Over all, the night was terrific and I can't wait for our next adventure there! Thank you.

THIS IS NOT JAPANESE FOOD.....If you like your food watered down and tasting bland, and the atmosphere similar to a 3 star hotel buffet then this is the place you should come to eat. Every dish was a bad version of the real thing and MORE expensive than what you pay elsewhere. I would skip this restaurant altogether.

We have gone to Yamagata every few months now for the last 3 years. Each & every time the service has been superb. We've celebrated birthdays, anniversary & even our wedding (night before) dinner with our overseas guests. It is a "must" venue when we have visitors and refer every one to it. The menu is beautiful with options for kids, vegetarians, banquet, individual meals. The staff are lovely & take great & personal care of their guests. The atmosphere is fun, family orientated, with one night a large adults party was next to our table & they had as much fun as our family focussed table did. Choose to sit at a Teppanyaki table or on a normal table, a single guest or a large group have been accomodated to. Want somewhere to treat guests to a fun night? Yamagata is the place, or need just a quiet family night, this too can be arranged. We normally sit for a banquet however we've seen small couples served, large adult parties, small family quiet, quik meals. No booking has been too difficult. Their food is beautiful! I can't wait for our next night out.

Don't go there!!! very bad service. We arrived at 8:30PM and was served at 10:30PM and when asked how far away our order was management was very aggressive.

We attended the Yamagata restaurant on 24/10/09 at 6 p.m. for the first time to commemerate our 11th Wedding Anniversary. This was our first experience to a Teppanyaki themed outing and were pleasantly surprised. The location was easily accessible with lots of parking, Upon entery we were greated with beautiful smiles and escorted to out seats. Met with our chrismatic chefs who were well attired and ready to serve and display their exceptional skills. We then observed as our meal was mastered over a BBQ plate. The food was so absolutely magnificent that we personally have never tasted such flavoursome food. We had prawns, chicken and beef as our set menu which was cooked to perfection. The staff were professional and very friendly only to add to the vibe of the ambience. Highly recommended to all. 5 Stars from us. I thank-you for this experience Restaurant Yamagata!!!!!!!

A group of 10 of us went last night for a birthday celebration. Our Host/Cook was John - we had the best time ever - we laughed so much, the food was fresh and delicious, the entertainment was continuous. I think the venue really has it together and works well as a team, I think a lot happens behind the scenes that you wouldn't really notice which makes for smooth running. My drink never became empty. And today I can't stop talking about it and laughing when thinking about some of the things that happened. Grab a good crowd and a celebration and check it out - our first teppanyaki experience and I'm totally thrilled.

Good to excellent food. Service was good but not brilliant . Restaurant is a little tired looking from the exterior but good value for money. Left not still feeling hungry, unlike previous teppanyaki experiences.
