Dumplings are beloved all across the world in one form or another. The one thing all dumplings have in common is that they are cooked balls of dough. The dough may vary between flour, potatoes and bread and contain filling, have other ingredients mixed in, or be served plain. There’s a huge variety of dumplings across international cuisines, and they can be served sweet or savoury, as an accompaniment or as the star of a dish in their own right.

Asian dumplings are perhaps the most popular choice for takeaway. In Chinese cuisine, where dumplings were said to have been invented in the 3rd century AD, a common dumpling is the jiaozi. Thinly rolled dough is stuffed with ground meat such as pork, mutton, beef, chicken, fish or prawns, and chopped vegetables such as cabbage and onions.  They may then be boiled, steamed or fried (in which case they’re known as “pot stickers”) and enjoyed alongside a range of other dim sum.

Wontons are another well-known form of Chinese dumpling. They usually include a heartier, meatier filling and thinner dough than jiaozi and are commonly boiled and served in a soup. Wontons are found more readily in Southern China, which is where many of the Chinese takeaway dishes known in Australia originate.

Other Eastern Asian countries boast their own versions of dumplings. Japanese gyoza are based upon Chinese jiaozi and usually fried and served with dipping sauce. Mandu, a Korean dumpling, are versatile and can contain typically Korean ingredients (like kimchi) or be used to make soup.  They’re believed to have originated in Mongoli in the 15th century.

India has a large variety of dumplings that may be less known to Australian diners. Samosas are fried dumplings stuffed with meat and spices and enjoyed as a snack. Here they often serve as entrees to curry main dishes alongside favourites like tandoori chicken.  Many Indian dumplings are sweet, like Modak, which is stuffed with coconut and sugar and eaten with ghee, or Gujia, filled with dried fruit and dairy. Nepalese dumplings (“momo”) are served with a spicy sauce and are slowly gaining in popularity.

Australia is fortunate to have access to all of these dumplings thanks to our proximity to Asia. Each culture might have its own variations, but there’s something all dumplings share: they are a communal food, designed to be shared. For an authentic and memorable experience, enjoy your next takeaway dumplings with family and friends.
