Supreme Pizza delivery from local restaurants

The supreme exemplifies the evolution of the modern pizza. Where traditional Italian pizzas were – and still are – very simple combinations of dough and a handful of quality, complementary ingredients, the supreme pizza sits at the other end of the scale: a generous, haphazard meal of flavourful ingredients tossed together to bring maximum taste to every mouthful.

The epitome of modern pizza, the supreme has its roots in Italian cuisine but more strongly reflects American tastes. Following World War II, American soldiers who had been stationed in Italy – along with Italian immigrants themselves – brought the concept of the pizza to the USA, where it quickly became popular and evolved into the favourite takeaway dish we know today.

The only rule about what constitutes a supreme pizza is that the toppings are many and varied. There are almost as many types of supreme pizzas as there are pizza restaurants, and you will be hard-pressed to find any pizza joint in Australia that doesn't offer a supreme in one form or another. Usually tomato sauce is used as a base, but BBQ sauce, pesto or peri-peri are also becoming more common.

Supreme toppings usually include a variety of meats. Favourites include shaved ham, bacon, pepperoni, salami, sausage, chicken and meatballs, but any combinations is entirely up to the discretion of the restaurant and the customer. Gourmet pizza restaurants are becoming increasingly likely to offer less usual meat choices like tandoori or teriyaki chicken or Greek lamb.

If you can think of a vegetable, you can probably find it on a supreme pizza somewhere. Old standards include capsicum, garlic, mushrooms, olives, onions and tomatoes, but you might also find vegetables such as artichokes, jalapenos, sun-dried tomatoes, snow peas, spinach and even root vegetables like potato, sweet potato or pumpkin. Cheeses may also vary from mozzarella and parmesan to blue cheese, brie, feta or haloumi.

The supreme pizza is an Australian favourite that has a little something for everyone. Hugely adaptable, the beauty of the supreme is in the choice it gives the customer: there now exist vegetarian supremes, gluten-free supremes and even halal and kosher supremes. If you want to please everyone, order a supreme pizza for your next takeaway.
