I've got to admit, was pleasantly surprised. Food arrived right on time (down to a minute or two), the patatas bravas were steaming hot and the portion was very generous! The chicken burger was delicious and the tarta de santiago moist and not too rich. The only drawback for me were the gambas, but that was only because I wasn't too crazy about the taste of the sauce (never tried it before though so it was a bit of a risk on my part - they were cooked well however). Overall very good food.

Basque was great. The delivery was incredibly quick and the food didn't disappoint. We had the goats cheese croquettes (10!!), patatas bravas (10!!), lamb (7) and caesar salad (7 - would have been higher if the dressing was on the side). A great experience. Will order again.

Basque has become our 'local'. We love the basque/Spanish experience - whether during the day for some light snacks and some sangria or for dinner. The food array is broad and very flavoursome, and traditional. The garlic prawns are a must and the Spanish doughnuts with chocolate sauce are heavenly. On some occasions when the restaurant is extremely busy service can be a little slow but this is to be expected. The staff are always fun and lively. Wine selection could be broader but the wines offered are a good representation of the basque region.

The two tapas dishes of Fried Potato and Octopus were acceptable, however the Paeilla (which should be their signature dish) was gluggy and tasteless. Waste of time and money, don't go.

    • Overall 9.5 |  Food 9  |  Ambience 9  |  Value 10  |  Service 10

great little surprise, even though it was very busy waiters were very friendly, gave their suggestions and knew about the food and local spanish beers. food was unexpectedly tasty, we had a tasting plate of 10 servings and they looked normal but they were surprisingly very tasty. great night, we would definitely go again.

    • Overall 8.8 |  Food 9  |  Ambience 9  |  Value 8  |  Service 9

Consistently chipper service with bustling Spanish-like atmosphere, just like a real tapas bar in Madrid or Seville or Barcelona - without the smokers! Have been several times over the past three years - thrice for dinner and once for an afternoon session, the most recent time being early December 08 for dinner during which it did appear service had slipped ever so slightly although it was extremely busy. Highlights - garlic prawns, pickled mushrooms, churros with chocolate dipping sauce We will be there again soon!

Was a great restaurant when I first went a couple of years ago...not so much these days. Mainly the service had dropped in value but the food has sadly gone down town also. Some of our tapas dishes were forgotten all together and also one of our dessert dishes too. The staff tried to make up for it with complementary Spanish donuts but this was long after we had already finished our luke-warm coffees and lost interest in the sweets (which were on the cold/dry side...a regretful evening unfortunately.

    • Overall 6.3 |  Food 6  |  Ambience 7  |  Value 6  |  Service 6

Nice buzzy, noisy atmosphere. Very attentive and friendly staff. Food a bit hit and miss. "Chorizo on toast", is exactly that, a chorizo sliced in half on two bits of dry toast. Looks like something you might find on the pavement ... But garlic prawns were great, codfish croquettes nice, but remarkably mean with the aioli. Calamari nice and fresh but the "cheese puffs" glutinous and stodgy. Overall, a good place for a bottle of wine or two and some nibbles / tapas on the side. Not for dinner.

A friend and I went on a Thursday night before 7pm so before it got too busy... Staff were lovely (in particular one gorgeous English man behind the bar), food and wine was delicious! Churros with dipping for dessert really finished the meal off wonderfully. We even got a coffee for the walk back to the car! Will definitely return to try the degustation menu...

Great food and wine - perfect for a girls night catch up where you can all share and eat form communal dishes. Lovely cosy atmoshphere but a little noisy. Staff were very attentive and helpful.

Excellent - Must have the Degustation meal. The eggplant is a real hit.

    • Overall 4.3 |  Food 5  |  Ambience 6  |  Value 4  |  Service 2

I was a little disappointed in the restaurant. I was a regular customer about 2 -3 years ago and had a very good memory of the place, so I recommended it to my friends. I thought the tapas had become a lot smaller and we had about 4 different waiters come and ask for our order in the first 5 minutes of us sitting down.... felt a little under pressure. The food was good though, just a little small... BAD Chai Tea though....

Tasty food. Not a lot of choice for me being vegetarian, but enough to get by.

    • Overall 6.8 |  Food 8  |  Ambience 6  |  Value 7  |  Service 6

The food was very nice and well presented. Only drawback was the service at times was a little rushed, perhaps being Sat night and also Australia Day didn't help.

Basque tapas & wine- Review My review July 2007 ‘Basque’ tapas & wine, situated in Melbourne’s bustling Chapel St is home to the sensual and mouth watering cuisine of Spain.Enter ‘Basque’ the first thing you notice is the warm alluring atmosphere with flickering flames and wax dripping down the candelabras. Music plays softly, you can watch the chefs in the kitchen move swiftly and effortlessly as if in a choreographed dance, while tempting aromas waft from the kitchen tantalizing your taste buds. Oysters with white gazpacho served warm, and as smooth as silk to eat, absolutely divine. Next, Gambas al pil pil, sizzling garlic and chili prawns and whilst I’m not a huge chili fan, this colorful dish was a perfect blend of ingredients. The Patatas bravas, fried potatoes sprinkled with spicy paprika salt and aioli complimented the array of dishes constantly being served as did the Berejena en mojo, sesame crusted eggplant with goats cheese. I was still in for a surprise when I was served Vieras con jamon, scallop baked with crisp jamon in a sweet chili glaze, just exquisite.Desert was sheer bliss; Churros con chocolate, Spanish donuts with hot chocolate sauce. Whether you are vegetarian, a meat lover or into seafood, there is something for everyone at ‘Basque’. Staff have an excellent knowledge of each dish and appropriate wines, to enhance your dining experience.Satisfying the senses at ‘Basque’ is self-indulging, but let’s face it, you’re worth it.

Teh degustation was really worthwhile, especially with the discount from Menu Log. The wine was a bit more expensive than I'd thought, but was good.

This restaurant provides a fun and vibrant atmosphere. We went on Wednesday night and they had a live spanish music. Our order and the bill were messed up but we will come back nevertheless. The food was really good. Anna - September 2007

The Degustation meals were fantastic. 9 Courses all delightfully tantalising! Each dish was unique in presentation and taste. Flavour of all dishes were intense and dramatic. My favourite would be the octopus salad! Ambiance was not great as we were seated quite close to the kitchen and the smoke from the grill/stove was literally hovering around us as we ate our meal and this got a bit distracting whilst we were eating. None theless, I would recommend this place for the fantastic fare!
