Cold Rock ice-creamery king one app customer
20th October 2016

Amidst the proposed redevelopment of the Toowoomba town centre and a decline in retail traffic, local ice-creamery owner, Mark Wynhoven, reveals how he has bucked the trend and achieved a boom in sales due a leading food delivery app.

Despite predictions that hundreds of Toowoomba businesses will close their doors this year, Cold Rock, Wilsonton has revealed business is far from failing, thanks to the investment in leading food delivery app Menulog.

Mark bought the franchise in March 2014, in conjunction with a fast paced career as a commercial real estate agent and formally an optical/retail executive, as a means to better suit his growing family’s lifestyle. An established local favourite, it was business as usual until the redevelopment, when foot traffic went into immediate decline.

Mark said: “It was a huge decision to purchase the store. My wife, who is a local school teacher, and I were apprehensive about taking something on neither of us had any experience in, particularly with a baby on the way. However, we knew Cold Rock was already a popular business in a great location, so we went for it.

“As soon as the redevelopment was proposed, we saw small businesses start to close. Our neighbours, the local fish and chip shop and the Turkish restaurant and kebab shops, shut down and will a number of other traders leaving; we saw a 30 per cent decline in customers.” Looking for innovative ways to drive customers to the restaurant, Mark approached fellow Cold Rock franchisee owners for ideas. Cold Rock in Deception bay recommended Mark try online trading, having great success on the Menulog platform.

“I never really thought about delivering ice cream straight to our customer’s houses, and had concerns about logistics, but like everything with our business, I thought I’d give it a go. From our first meeting, I was instantly impressed by Menulog’s ordering and delivery technology, and what they could add to my business,” said Mark.

“As soon as we were live online, I saw a notable difference in sales. We were immediately able to reach a whole new, untapped market of north Western Toowomba - those who wanted our unique ice cream combinations, shakes and waffles in the comfort of their own home! By partnering with such a well-known site, we were also able to increase our local awareness and benefit from Menulog’s marketing initiatives,” added Mark.

In fact, Menulog recently awarded Mark a prize of $10,000, as the winner of a competition to launch the new Menulog logo.

“I was absolutely ecstatic to win the Menulog prize - it was certainly a huge benefit for our growing family! However, it’s not just the cash we’re benefiting from - the customer reviews have become and enormously helpful tool for us, to both stimulate online conversation and give us valuable feedback to help continuously improve our business.”

Nine months after joining the Menulog platform, Mark says 15 per cent of his sales now come through the Menulog platform.

“I’d certainly recommend Menulog to other local food and drink businesses, particularly those in the same position we were in. Menulog has absolutely transformed our business and made it the success it is today.”
