Who doesn't love Italian food? With so many different pasta, meat and seafood dishes, Italian cuisine is incredibly popular in Australia. And let’s not forget about the pizza! From starters to desserts, Italian cuisine has had a massive impact on Australian palates. Due to mass migration over the last century, delicious flavours and ingredients ‒ including herbs and spices ‒ have become extremely common in both restaurants and home kitchens.

Penne Arrabbiata
Ragù is the most famous of Neapolitan meat sauces. Made from a soffritto (the holy trinity of onion, celery and carrot), meat and tomato sauce with guest appearances from red wine, basil and olive oil, it’s a speciality of Naples. Penne Arrabbiata is a very spicy (and Vegan-friendly) sauce made from garlic, tomatoes and dried red chilli peppers cooked in olive oil. Tagliatelle al Fungi is another favourite with fresh mushrooms like button, chestnut and oyster with garlic, wine and thyme. Ravioli Ricotta e Spinaci (ricotta cheese and spinach) is very popular nowadays, but ravioli can be traced all the way back to the Roman Empire. (You only need go back to your Menulog app.)
Spaghetti Bolognese
The two most commonly used Italian words in Britain are Spaghetti Bolognese (aka Spag Bol). Rich, tomato-based sauce nestling in a swirling, fork-friendly mass of pasta is the embodiment of La Dolce Vita and – although there are numerous variants of veal, beef, lamb, pork or vegetarian – it always does the Italian job. (Note: The Family love their sauce with Meatballs.) Spaghetti Vongole, a more refined classic infused with garlic, clams, white wine and chilli flakes, is a dish for lovers of the Mediterranean (or even North) Sea.
