Sushi is essentially vinegared rice, often wrapped in seaweed and featuring many combinations of ingredients, including salmon and avocado, to crab meat, to shrimp tempura, to lobster, and even eel. Many variations of Sushi found in the Western world, including the infamous California roll (avocado, crab meat, cucumber), the Spicy tuna roll (raw tuna, hot sauce, mayonnaise), the Rainbow roll (basically the California roll with different kinds of fish), are not commonly found in Japan, if at all. In its motherland, the art of Sushi making is indeed just that, an art form. In fact, it can take anywhere from two to four years to master this painstaking craft. The discipline, commitment, and accuracy of this culinary training doesn't seem too dissimilar to military school, we'd say!
In Japan, the world-famous Sushi dish is usually enjoyed on special occasions. Want to start a celebration at your place? Start with the Menulog app. There are as many Sushi as there are fish in the sea. Gunkanzushi (Gunkan = small cups, zushi = sushi) are cups of rice and dried seaweed elegantly filled with seafoods such as sea urchin and fish roe. Norimaki are sushi rolls wrapped in dried seaweed sheets and there are countless varieties and thicknesses. Temakizushi are cones made of Nori Seaweed filled with rice, seafood and veggies. Oshizushi is pressed sushi, where the fish is pressed onto the rice in a wooden box. And Inarizushi are deep-fried tofu ‘pockets’ filled with sushi rice. They’re named after the Shinto god for fertility, rice, agriculture and foxes (which are quick, slick and urban, a bit like Menulog deliveries).
Thinking Sushi? Then think Menulog – it’s the way to get that fresh fish feast in front of your eyes. Fast. The world loves Sushi, but not everyone knows it isn’t actually raw fish – raw fish is simply the most popular ingredient. The name sushi refers to the rice itself, which is seasoned with vinegar. Also, the word ‘sushi’ becomes ‘zushi’ in word combinations. For instance, the classic Nigirizushi are small, hand-pressed mounds of rice with a dab of wasabi topped by various ingredients, like Maguro (Tuna), Hamachi (Yellowtail), Ebi (Prawn) and Tamago (Egg). Soy Sauce is used for dipping, and Wasabi (aka Japanese Horseradish) can be mixed with it (don’t blow your head off). Gari (that’s Pickled Ginger to you and me) is also served to clear the palate between bites. (Clearly worth ordering through the Menulog app.)
