Balter Brewing Company was founded in 2016 by surfing champs Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, Bede Durbidge and Josh Kerr (plus a few more mates), on the sunny shores of Currumbin, Gold Coast.
Our panel of XPA judges can certainly vouch for the waves of deliciousness in Balter XPA, which to date has more than 20 awards to its short name. They remarked on its enticing tropical fruit aroma and flavour, balanced by slight bitterness and smooth, clean, refreshing finish. Like most good stories, this one started over a beer, when Richard Adamson and Oscar McMahon got talking in a pub. In 2012, they were given the green light to brew craft beer in a warehouse in Newtown and Young Henrys was officially in business. There are four signature beers, including the Newtowner. Moon Dog Craft Brewery started in 2010 when two brothers, Josh and Jake Uljans, and their mate, Karl van Buuren, decided to try something different with brewing. Taking inspiration from experimental breweries in the US, Moon Dog was about brewing high concept, interesting, but mainly fun beers. Karl has since taken on the role as Master Brewer and runs production at the brewery.
This beer is brewed using unique specialty malt that gives the distinct biscuit character, which balances against the big American hop flavours. Dry hopping is done prior to cooling, to ensure that only the best fruit characters of the Americans hops are integrated into the beer. This beer has a real clean maltiness with a citrusy /peachy aromas and flavour profile. It finishes with a nice smooth bitterness....

A single sip of Wente Chardonnay was enough to leave the entire tasting panel with the lasting impression that above all else, balance is central in Wente's winemaking philosophy. When you delve into the winemaking techniques adopted this is reaffirmed; 50% of the wine is fermented in French oak while the other 50% is fermented in stainless steel tanks. It was in this balance that we found a clear winner.

This Pinot Gris is a true regional expression, rich and textural with floral aromas of apricot and honeysuckle. The juice was fermented slowly at cool temperatures to retain the very distinctive regional and varietal characters. The ferment was stopped with 10g residual sugars to ensure a lush and palate filling wine. No oak was used in the winemaking. The resulting wine has hints of apricot and honeysuckle on the nose, and rich textural palate of stone fruits and cream balanced by citrus....
